As I delved into this book, I found myself uncertain about its nature. Initially, I presumed it to be a fantasy novel filled with mythical creatures and magic. To some extent, my assumption was correct. The flashbacks depicting epic battles resonated with the fantastical clashes I associate with the genre. However, the primary setting gradually hinted at a post-apocalyptic world. This intriguing narrative blends elements of fantasy and dystopia, all unfolding within a town that brought to mind the film “The Village.”

The author’s use of modified words, such as “morta” for a rifle, caught me off guard, initially making me question whether it was a typographical error. Dog-like creatures were referred to as “canine,” but a horse was called a “slep.” This back-and-forth terminology took me by surprise and made it challenging to follow the storyline. Moreover, the creatures themselves were briefly described, adding to the confusion surrounding their nature. I’m still unsure about the specifics of a “whist” or a “frek,” aside from them being some form of critter.

Overall, the storyline itself was well-conceived. There were moments where I contemplated walking away from the book, and I must admit that it took me some effort to fully immerse myself in the story’s beginning. However, I persevered, and while the characters were reasonably well-developed, intentional gaps in their development added to the mysterious and enigmatic atmosphere of the narrative.

I was surprised by how long it took Vega to leave the town. Initially, I had expected this book to encompass her journey into the Quag. However, staying in the town served a purpose, as it contributed to the buildup of mystery that Vega is driven to unravel and find answers to.

The Finisher audiobook Series Shifters Unbound

I find myself torn between both liking and hating this book. Although it’s not specifically targeted towards my age group (I’m over 40), my admiration for Baldacci compelled me to give it a chance. However, I found it to be a frustrating read, with instances of excessive detail followed by abrupt “jumps” in the story where more elaboration would have been appreciated. The ending, although predictable early on, still managed to be quite frustrating. The narrative carried a blended essence reminiscent of both Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, which gave it a somewhat over-engineered feel. It almost seemed as if it were written with a potential film adaptation in mind, to which it would likely lend itself well. It’s evident that a sequel is on the horizon, and despite my reservations, I am inclined to give it a read.

Audiobook The Finisher by Cris Dukehart

Crafting an imaginary world can be a challenging feat, and unfortunately, this book falls short in that regard. While certain sections made a commendable attempt, overall, I felt dissatisfied upon reaching the end. It’s worth noting that my decision to read this book stemmed from my admiration for the author, as I appreciate their work.

Audio The Finisher narrated by Cris Dukehart

While this book may initially have a slow start and encounters some rough patches with confusing language, it swiftly evolves into a captivating read. The dystopian setting, rife with lies and deception, compels both the protagonist and the reader to crave more information. Personally, I adore the characters Vega and Delph. Although this may not be a perfect book from an educator’s perspective, it was never intended to be. It cleverly deviates from the norm, showcasing its distinctiveness and creativity. Having read the first two books in the series, I am genuinely curious about the upcoming third installment. The author’s skill in creating suspense is undeniably addictive.

Regarding the one-star reviews I’ve come across, it seems that many people are disappointed because this book differs from the author’s usual works. It deviates from his typical style, and while it may not suit everyone’s taste, it would be fair to fully immerse oneself in the story before delivering such harsh criticism. Admittedly, there are areas that could use improvement, such as the creation of the language. However, if one continues with the series, the unique and captivating storyline unfolds, leaving you yearning to discover what happens next. It’s worth noting that this book took five years to write and involved extensive research, which deserves recognition and credit. Personally, as a fan of fantasy and young adult novels, I find its rough spots forgivable in light of its overall merits.

I am a great fan of David Baldacci and have read many of his books. When I read the first couple of pages of this book , I thought this cannot be his writing as it was so very different to any books I had read before. I read on and was so pleased I did. I did not think “ Fantasy” books would be my thing but this was absolutely riveting and I found myself really caught up in the characters of Vega Jane and Delph and even her canine. A brilliant ,brilliant read. I will most certainly be reading all of the Vega Jane books.
