Women Don’t Owe You Pretty

I bought this book almost a year ago now and I won’t lie, I loved it. But after reading “What a Time to be Alone” by Chidera Eggerue I now know that what Florence did was wrong. She was her friend and she stole her ideas, even if most of it is her own words.. look at the cover! Why start your book with the ideas of a Black women knowing how this world works. I don’t want to hate on anyone and I surely don’t know the whole story but just please go buy Chidera Eggrues Book! Buy both if you must! I can promise you’ll love Chideras more if you’re an adult!

Much like some other reviews, my largest issue with this book is that it\’s essentially \”Baby\’s First Introduction to Feminism.\” There was no discourse or groundbreaking concepts about feminism that I have not already thoroughly encountered- not even from reading feminists texts, but literally just on Instagram. This is a very baseline intro for someone who has not done any of their own reading or research but wants to get into self-empowerment and feminism. Additionally, this whole new trend of talking about being an \’empath\’ is a bit to woo-woo for me. Not every woman who is sensitive to the feelings of others is an empath. Most people aren\’t. There\’s just a lot of stuff in this book that\’s a bit too pseudo-spiritual for me. The art was really cool and I think that FG is awesome! It was just a really expensive purchase for essentially what I have already read and thus couldn\’t really emotionally connect with because this content is largely available from any loud feminist on the internet.

Honestly, this was pretty disappointing and didn’t do much for me. I love the author (from instagram where you can essentially get all of this info for free) and wanted to like it but the majority of it came off as childish and vague. The illustrations were great but there were zero pieces of groundbreaking information. I can see it being semi-helpful for someone who is young, has never been to therapy, or had any sort of super basic intro to feminist works/ideas.

Feeling unsure of yourself? Having a hard time with a breakup or dealing with self-confidence? This is the book for you. This book reminded me to love myself and work towards making myself whole (instead of looking for my \”other half\”) This book was gifted to me at a time that I really needed it and now, I recommend it to all my friends, regardless of sex. This is a must read.

Really great and inspiring book which makes you question a lot of things – in the best way possible. Florence Given has helped me transform a lot of my thougts about important topics both through her Instagram and through this fantastic book.
