I have never read any books by this author but I will certainly be looking for the next installment of this series.
I mostly enjoy reading Lesbian fiction,so I was pleasantly surprised to find this book in my Fussy Librarian recommendations.
Zena ( not Xena ) is a slave in a future world who longs for the chance to be free.
Her dream is to be a warrior so she can free herself and her family.
Hope Book 2 is in the works.

The story kept me interested enough to to keep reading it. I did feel that that the storyline was lacking something to bring it up to the next level. Perhaps it was that it was written in the first person which can be harder to engage with if not done very very well.
It does feel like a first outing for the author and Id hate to knock it too much because it does have potential. It was decently written and I did finish it but I havent made up my mind if Ill read the next one or not, perhaps if I have nothing else on my list I might seek it out.
I think it would be enjoyable for some people but I just wasnt totally into it.

Audiobook Soldier (Zena Ezra #1) by Edward Lake
This book was a fast read with an interesting, fleshed out character in Zena. He spends much time developing the universe the characters inhabit by fleshing out the war and the corrupt religion that fuels it. As a space opera, it’s a wonderful start to what could be a good series. As the book was marketed to me as a lesbian space opera, I found it promising but lacking in the ways most lesbian-lead stories written by men lack, or female-lead stories in general written by men.
The female protagonist often takes a back burner position to the men in the story. It was especially bothersome in this book because the men are lesser characters, some not even really important enough for me to call them supporting characters. The only significant female character is the protagonist, Zena, but I feel I know less about her than her male rival, the general, and the pastor.
This isn’t to say the book isn’t worth reading. I did enjoy the story. I just hope to spend more time with Zena and her motivations in next installation.

Audio Soldier (Zena Ezra #1) narrated by Brenda Scott Wlazlo
I absolutely loved this book! I feel like theres a bit of Zena in all of us so it makes it really easy to relate to her even though Ive never been in a war or been a slave or anything else that occurs in this book. I cant wait to see if Pastor Saros gets his comeuppance and I hope Sadie learns lessons from this as well! Fantastic story! I cant wait for more!

Its was great to see Mr. Lake release another great book. As always, this publication delivers that imagination from Lake, and this was another great read. I would recommend checking out some other publications from this author. Cant wait for the next installment of this series.
