Empire of Dirt

This is the first time I have ever given a book a five star review. there is nothing bad I can say except that it had to end. Thankfully there are more books in the series to explore.

If you’ve read book 1 rise of the ranger then you will know what to expect. More of the same here. Great stuff for fantasy fans. I’m actually half way through book 3 now as I cant get enough. I did read the next series of 3 books before I got to this series, so it was a bit odd seeing the same characters before they evolved into might I say different entities. The next series is even better where the author stepped his game up a notch. I’m a big fan of Miles Cameron, Anthony Ryan, Gail Z Martin in the fantasy writing genre so if you like them get stuck in here.

Empire of Dirt audiobook Series The Echoes Saga

I really am going to have to tamper my expectations for the rest of the series. The best compliment I can give this book is that it was like discovering Brandon Sanderson for the first time all over again!

Empire of Dirt, the second book in the nine volume The Echoes Saga, takes everything I loved from the first book and adds even more. There is still a ton of action (though there are few less head decapitations. There new characters that are just as great as the original cast. Lastly, there are revelations! The world within this series just continues to get bigger. Also, the cover is amazing!

The main driving point of this book, and series so far, are the characters. I actually care about the characters. A story can be good but there has to be great characters and this series has them. Many of the characters feel like their my family or best friends.

Audiobook Empire of Dirt by Philip C. Quaintrell

Not surprisingly an excellent follow up as Book 2 in this series. Remarkable character development and thoughtful progression unfolding as we get into the Saga. Really nice work!

Audio Empire of Dirt narrated by Steven Brand

The story is great! The grammar and spelling could be gone over better. My copy has a page, about every 70 or so, that comes unbound. I’m not seeing anyone else complain about this, however. I may have received a lemon.

The second in the series broadens the horizons of the first. It shows essentially the same strengths and weaknesses. Quaintrell’s ideas on magic are interesting at times, his strategic plotting is decent and the central characters display a degree of psychological and moral complexity which means they at least possess two-and-a-half dimensions, if they aren’t fully developed. However, his fight scenes are fearfully repetitive – in particular there is a clear hierarchy of power which means the outcome is inevitable and clear to the reader before they combat starts. He also has far too many cliched minor characters; cowardly bullies, arrogant leaders, loyal but dull servants and the rest. There’s much to like here but if he’d read a bit more widely and chosen his influences better this could have been first grade.

It took me a whole in book 1 to connect with it but here in book 2 the characters have really had a chance to flesh out. I particularly like Asher and Galeon because they are the most human and multi-faceted characters. I’d like to see more of that from these characters. A spark of good in Alidyr to show he’s not just some pure evil sycophant, a struggle with doubt or fury or something in the self-righteous Reyna. I’m looking forward to what comes next!

Bought this having read the first in the trilogy so wanted to see how the story continued. The basic story is good but the author could do with a good editor to remove a lot of the far too lengthy scenes of battle and bloodshed. There’s only so many ways to kill an enemy and I really don’t want to revisit them for page after page – you’ve made your point so now lets get on. Could also do with some grammar and vocabulary assistance, some words are plainly the wrong meaning and actually writing “should of” instead of “should have” is one of my pet hates! Picky maybe but it’s an irritation and for me, detracts from the story. Not sure yet if I’ll read the last in the trilogy, the jury is still out on that one! However, criticisms aside, the book passed some fairly enjoyable hours (after learning to flick through the bloodshed!) so probably the best thing to do is read it yourself – you may not be as critical as I am.and will think it a rollicking good story.
