The Girl Next Door (The Girl Next Door #1)

I hate writing this because I love Emma Hart but this was 3/4 of a book at best 1/2 if you take into consideration that there’s a prequel that should have just been the beginning of the book but anyways I read reviews saying it wasn’t a whole book and figured they just didnt like the ending and I would try it but now I get it it ends in the middle of what should have been 3/4 of the way through the book I had to check and make sure it downloaded properly that’s how randomly it ended everything else was cute it had so much potential but it was really rushed and just not enough substance I have to say this is probably the worst I’ve read from Emma Hart and it makes me sad I considered giving it 1star but I didnt because I loved Kai as a character i think Ivy was flakey and there was no resolution or ahha moment in the relationship that we read about we just heard about it in the epilogue that somewhere it happened spoiler alert****** they never even have the baby it ends with her being like 7 months pregnant and they are in the same situation at the end that they are at the beginning there was no story

I absolutely undeniably love Emma Hart. I have undeniably enjoyed every one of her books and this one was no different. I love that she makes you laugh so much with her characters. Her books have it all steamy parts, hilarious parts and emotional parts it is so hard to start one of her books and not want to finish it in one sitting yet hate when its over. The Girl next door is about Kai and Halley. They are neighbors and have this chemistry that scares Halley. After one night of passion Halley finds out she is pregnant and is faced with the fact that she must tell Kai. Kai surprise Halley by being supportive and loving to her. There chemistry grown as they prepare to be parents. I love how funny all of the characters in this book are but come on my absolute favorite is Halleys Granma. Oh and the part where the grandmas are fighting I couldnt stop laughing. This book was just perfection I hated it had to end. I hope Anna gets a book as well all of the rest of the crew.

I love her work. I pre-ordered this book bc I love her books!

That being said…. I really REALLY want to beg Ms Hart to get at least ONE American beta reader or editor.

It drives me bonkers and really just pulls me out of the story when the scene and characters are American (like this one), but the slang and terms used are European.

Reading the character, an American at an American doctor’s office, is being told that ibuprofen needs to be avoided but paracetamol is ok.

No one calls it that here! It’s Tylenol or Acetaminophen.

It’s little things like that, little details that are wrong that really detract from the joy of being submersed in her work and the story.

I’m going to start this review by stating that I loved The One Night Stand Next Door. It was flirty and sexy. It had a witty spark to it. Somehow, The Girl Next Door lost that spark for me. There was witty comebacks and banter but I felt like the whole book was like that which felt off to me. This definitely is a light hearted read which is why I like reading Emma Hart’s books. It definitely checked off that box for me. I just wish it had a bit more substance / meat to it. I was expecting a lot more emotion – I don’t know. It was still a cute book. Everything just fell too easy, I think.

I would give this a 3.5 rating. It was a quick read and mostly centered around Ivy wondering if her feelings for Kai were real or not. Kai’s parents were mentioned once which seemed odd given the storyline. At the end of the book, the name of one of Kai’s friends was suddenly changed. There was some cute banter throughout the book but I flipped a page and there was the epilogue.
