Once again DCI Lorimer is chasing down a murderer in Glasgow, Scotland, with the help of his friend, Psychologist Solomon Brightman. A young prostitute is strangled and left in the subway in an interesting pose, with a red carnation in her downward praying hands. Then a young nurse is murdered in a private clinic, posed in the same way. When more deaths happen, Lorimer and Brightman must consider the possibility of a serial murderer. But something strange confuses the situation.

This is the second book in this series, but it started out considerable slower than the excellent first book, NEVER SOMEWHERE ELSE. Had I not read the first book, I might not have continued on after the first couple of chapters. It did pick up considerably after the first half, and I definitely got into the mystery. Plan to read book three and decide which book best represents this author. Loved the relationships in book one, and the characters definitely developed further here. Here’s hoping book one is the best example of Alex Gray’s writing ability!

A Small Weeping audiobook in series DCI Lorimer

Good, fast paced mystery. I read one of Alex Grays mysteries after buying a copy in a bookstore on Mull. My husband and I both loved it so we decided to get some of her first DCI Lorimer books. Our library doesnt carry them so I checked for them on Amazon and bought her first two. Just finished this one. Great read, smooth style

Audiobook A Small Weeping by Alex Gray

I am perfectly aware that publishers tend to overblow the product they selling. So, know we have a plethora of tartan-noir writers, following the trails of Rankin, MacBride, McDermid, Mina and quite a few others. Alex Gray, despite the enthusiastic praising doesn’t belong in the same category. She is a competent, skillful writer but she lack creativity and plotting, conniving abilities that the others possess in abundance. It was a pleasant, but not memorable read, so perhaps 3,5 stars would be a just reward.

Very enjoyable characters and storyline in this book. I find the descriptions of Scotland fascinating and interesting. I like the rapport between Lorimer and Solly. I look forward to reading next book in series.

Alex Gray never fails to deliver a tight, and easy to read mystery, full of suspense and action by believable characters. Recommended for British mystery lovers.
