I’ve read all the books in this series, up to this one, which I abandoned in disgust about half way through. They seem to get worse as I move through them. John Pearce is especially tiresome. Dorkishly I allows himself to be constantly outmaneuvered by his enemies and rivals, and in every book he lets down his friends through incompetence, greed, stupidity or concupiscence.

An Ill Wind audiobook in series John Pearce

The Adrarmal had it in for this 1lt and wanted him out of the way’ I ordered this book because I like the author David Donachie. Ordered all of his writing. all these books basically revolve around one incident and it still isn’t resolved after 9 books just stopped reading in the middle can’t recommend it

in this series of books we always seem to leave the hero hanginig. we are however getting closer to solving his problems and a happy ever after we hope. A great series of novels in the tradition of O’Brian, Kent and Forrester A good combination of action, intrigue and adventure for lovers of this genre.

Audiobook An Ill Wind by David Donachie

I purchased the first in this series on 26 August 2017 and have just bought the seventh, so that probably speaks for itself! The chronology of the books is unusual, in that the 7th book is set less than a year after the first. The story-line also unusually carries over from one book to another to quite a degree. The hero is unusual – a naval officer who really doesn’t want to be at sea at all and has no ambition for advancement whatsoever. This places him in an advantageous position when dealing with his superiors, where he gets away with more or less saying and doing what he wishes. One small negative is that the author feels a need to constantly repeat the back-story in far too much detail – I find this a bit irritating. Having said that, I would certainly recommend the series to others who enjoy naval fiction based in the 17th/18th century.

Audio An Ill Wind narrated by Peter Wickham

Its as good read but if you have read the earlier John Pearce novels then there is a lot of repetition about how he got where is is and why. It does border on the tedious. Howver skipping that, its a good yarn. Not of the calibre of O’Brian though!

As observed by other readers, this series has dragged on for far too long with no advance in the underlying story.

I have read up to and including book 10 and don’t propose to buy and read any more unless and until I know that the last book has been issued.

The author consistently puts the screws to everyone really. Nobody gets off easy. That can be good but it can also get monotonous. Pearce can always be expected to say what he means, realize he shouldn’t say it while continuing to sputter our the regrettable words and then, well, regret the words just as he foresaw he would. So, while the writing is quite good, predictability is increasing with each book and monotony is growing. I will keep reading to see if anything new develops because Donachie can tell a good story if you take them all as separate entities. I do hope something – anything – will resolve soon though.
