Mate Bond audiobook Series Legends of Muirwood

I l I’ve the build up of characters and their relationships. The differences in personalities complement each other well. I didn’t want to put the book down until I co firmed or denied my predictions. I also love the subtle connections between the medium and spirituality. I can’t wait to find out what happens in the third installment.

Audiobook Mate Bond by Jeff Wheeler

Jeff wheeler did a great job with a story that is complex. My only reservation is the pace of the story especially in the beginning. I did not enjoy the constant emphasis on the lovesick Lia but enjoyed the book overall. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I love the Muirwood series. This book is not quite as good as the first one, but it’s close.

The Blight of Muirwood is a somewhat complicated story. It is the middle book of a trilogy, so that doesn’t help. To understand it better, it helps to have read the first book in the series, The Wretched of Muirwood first.

Muirwood Abbey is a school where scholars learn to read and write and to wield the phenomenon known as the Medium. Part magic, part mystical knowledge, and part Higher Power, The Medium is intimately intertwined with everything at Muirwood and the lands around it. It is sort of like the Force in Star Wars.

Lia is what is known as a Wretched – an orphan with no discernable family. At least that is how it appears. As such, she was never allowed to join the learners at the Abbey and never allowed to learn to read or write. Yet, in the first book, we learned that she has an unusually strong connection to the Medium. This is the driving force for her adventures this time, as it was in the previous book. This time, she is given the position of the Abbey’s Hunter, replacing Jon Hunter, who was killed in the previous book. It is her job to protect the Abbey and important people and things belonging to it.

Also, in the previous book, Lia fell in love with Colvin Price, the young Earl of Forshee, who accompanied her on her adventures at that time. He had promised to dance with her at the village festival on the next Whitsunday.
Unfortunately, Colvin’s duties prevent him from keeping his promise, and Lia is heartbroken despite her own new duties. When he does finally show up again, it is in the company of a young lady, also a Wretched, who, it has been determined is not a Wretched but a princess and who, for reasons of policy, it looks like Colvin will need to eventually marry. In the meantime, he is to be in charge of protecting her on the next stage of her journey.

Naturally, Lia is jealous. I was impressed that she resolutely recognized not only her jealousy but also that it could have the effect of eroding her connection to the Medium. She resolves to overcome the feeling and to help guard the other girl when she needs to as well.

There follows a long, complicated journey to another Abbey, during which Lia learns that all the Abbeys in the country are in danger. She also learns just enough of her own origins to enable her to begin to guess at the truth of them.

Enjoyed this story of a new “world”. The rules of how to function are interesting and made me think while reading. The notion of an all knowing force that controls people is not considered religious. It is a factual description combined with feelings and a star-wars like force. This story also teaches people to “listen” to and “use” the force. This story describes a rich use of fantasy and is enjoyable to read. My only criticism is the author does not always make it clear who is speaking during a particular sequence.

Lia Cook is strong in the Medium, unimaginably strong. Where did her strength come from? Strength in the medium is concentrated in lines of Families. Marriages between two strong members of different families concentrate more strength in the children, especially when the union is consecrated by a special vow.
But Lia is a Wretched at Muirwood Abbey. Wretched are orphans given to Abbies of the Maston order in secret without knowledge of parentage.
The Medium guides the lives of those in it’s service. Yet it can be twisted into evil with the use of Amulets. When a land becomes too filled with evil and lost service ice to the Medium harsh is the penalty.
Can Lia protect and preserve Muirwood from those who hate the Mastons? Only the Medium knows.
