The Coast-to-Coast Murders

This book is largely responsible for breaking me out of my reading slump early in the year. (Note: yes, I read this early in the year. I’m getting caught up on writing reviews. It’s been a crazy year!)

After I absolutely devoured this book, I NEEDED to jump into another novel immediately because I had such a great time on this journey. Luckily for me, the next book I read was The Family Across the Street by Nicole Trope and that was also an incredible read. So, suddenly I was out of my slump and enjoying reading again instead of not being able to focus.

But it all started here.

The Coast-to-Coast Murders is one of the best Patterson books I’ve read in a long time. It’s a crazy journey that tells a story of how powerful the mind is and how insidious mental illness can be. Or how the mind can be warped into working against you.

The Coast-to-Coast Murders audiobook

Very confusing story about adoptive children being manipulated by the Psychologists that adopted them. They played games with their minds with drugs and locking them in dark rooms. Who was the real killer? Michael or Megan?

Audiobook The Coast-to-Coast Murders by James Patterson

I think I want this to be a series. I wasn’t so sure about the collaboration of authors, but I am pleasantly surprised at how well these two wrote together. If you follow my reviews, you know I’m a big Barker fan. I guess teaming up with Patterson could really only be a win.

This book snags you from the first page. While it does go a little slow in the beginning, there is enough mystery to keep the reader compelled to see what will happen when things start to heat up. And they do heat up.

Let me point out that this book is told in multiple point of views. For those of you who aren’t fans of multiple point of views, don’t count this book out. This story can only be told that way. And it flows very well. The point of views will mess with your head and will keep you guessing. I couldn’t get enough of each chapter.

I will say, I teetered back and forth on what I thought the ending would be. The actual ending did cross my mind from the beginning. I did change it multiple times, but I kept going back to the who every now and then.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. Especially if you’re already a Patterson fan. You will enjoy his collaboration with Barker. I hope Barker finds some new readers with this book.

Audio The Coast-to-Coast Murders narrated by Renata Friedman

I am a James Patterson fan from several of his earlier works. I have no prior knowledge of the co-author.

I ‘read’ this book thru a combination of Audible and Kindle book version, so I could alternate reading with listening while in the car. This was my first Audible book, so used a free credit. But I LIKE being able to read the text as well, so I paused Audible a few chapters in and paid $14.99 to have the Kindle version as well. I do not regret the spend.

For the Audible book, there is a clear difference in the listen for free options in Kindle Unlimited and Audible. Audible used a variety of voice actors, and because this book is told from multiple character perspectives – having different voices helped greatly. You don’t get that detail when you ‘listen for free’.

As to the book itself. The story will captivate and tease you from the first few chapters. There is murder and mystery and a clear case against the culprit. But it does not take very long to figure out: nothing is clear at all. There are breadcrumbs but just when you think you have it all figured out, everything changes and the reader is back at ground zero to figure it all out again.

The story wraps up and goes into the finishing touches – or so I thought? Then the roller coaster backs up and takes you thru more loop de loops. Once I actually finished reading, I was left with questions. To a certain extent, I wish my questions were answered in a clear cut way. But that would be lazy. This one left me thinking. And now I think I should read it again. Knowing what I know now, I may ‘see’ it differently the second time around.

This book is full of twists and turns and when you think you have it all figured out you don’t. Typically that would be great but I found this too have too many turns without proper answers. The end gives you absolutely no closure. It’s a fascinating read but leaves too much unanswered.
