This book follows the life of Riley MacPherson as she goes through her father’s things when he passes away. Her mother had already passed away years earlier and so she travels back to her hometown to go through his things and to settle his affairs. Her brother Danny lives there, but wants nothing to do with any of it leaving Riley to clean up the mess all herself. As Riley begins to go through his things, she begins to uncover things about her past she hadn’t known yet, such as the secrets and lies revolving around her sister, Lisa’s, suicide. Before Riley came to town she thought she knew who she was, but she realizes soon after arriving that her life was not what she thought it was and she struggles to find out who she can really trust. As she uncovers the truth a little at a time, she comes to further realizations about herself and the people she believed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I did get mad at the main character a few times, but that just meant that the author really drew you in to the story!

Audiobook The Silent Sister by Cris Dukehart
This book has an interesting premise. It is told from two alternating points of view. Riley’s story takes place in the present, and covers her return to her childhood home to take care of her father’s estate after his sudden death. Her sister Lisa’s story takes place over twenty years ago, just after she fakes her suicide. (Not a spoiler).
Riley and Lisa have a brother named Danny, who has had a tough time with life, and lives like a recluse in the woods. He can not bear to help Riley with the work with the estate and blames Lisa for all that has gone wrong with him and the family.
Riley has experienced her family differently, and does not bear any ill will toward Lisa.
As the story unfolds one mystery after another is revealed and we learn that just about everybody in the story has lied to Riley about something and/or has been lied to about something significant.

Audio The Silent Sister narrated by Cris Dukehart
This is the first I’ve ever read by this author but won’t be the last. I really enjoyed it although I marked it down one star as I did get a little bogged down in the middle for no reason I could put my finger on. There were an incredible amount of twists ‘n’ turns throughout where I thought I knew just what happened and to who, only to realise how wrong I was as I progressed ! That’s always a nice surprise.
While I felt sorry for Danny, Riley’s brother, in some ways, at times he drove me to distraction and I had to wonder at her patience with him ! It was pretty appalling how many secrets resided in this one family, though I’m sure they’re far from alone. I really liked the characters of both Grady and Charlie. They were very different but very lovely men.
I only spotted a couple of errors-“The mini-refrigerator was empty except for three of cans of Pepsi”, I’d have used out on bail for/not out on bail in and awhile was used when it needed to be a while. Pretty good going, though, for an e-book !!
One line confused me-“She knew she’d met a man with that name somewhere, but she was too upset to admit it to her father”. I didn’t understand this at all.

Highly recommended to readers who treasure the depth of presenting the character’s emotions, problems, decisions they have to make, the surprises life brings.
I am sure the characters are based on real people, real events, real complexity of circumstances
I found many similarities in the lives of people I know or heard about. I read 15 of DCH books and can’t wait to continue with the other 5 waiting on my shelf. I find them very educational and provoking to think about many aspects of life. Thank you Diane!
