I thoroughly enjoyed these stories, as I typically have a fondness for coming-of-age tales featuring young underdogs who prove themselves.
Hugh enters the narrative as a student at a renowned mage school, a place of great size and repute. However, he finds himself labeled a failure, enduring unpopularity, ridicule, and bullying. Fortunately, his fortunes change when he, along with two other “failures,” is selected as an apprentice by a mysterious mage. For once, Hugh has a small circle of companions who are willing to spend time with him. Yet, this is merely the beginning of his journey.
Acquiring the two-volume pack containing the audiobook was a wise choice, and I must admit that the narrator did not particularly resonate with me. While he adeptly portrayed distinct voices, it appeared that he only exhibited two emotions throughout the narration—regular and angry.

Audiobook Mage Errant: Publisher’s Pack by John Bierce
Many magic academy stories tend to stumble in one aspect or another. They either succumb to the cliché of the apprentice transforming into an overwhelmingly powerful protagonist, become excessively fixated on romance at the expense of magic, or simply lack the enchanting ambiance that magic should evoke. However, this book excels in all regards, delivering a satisfying experience. The apprentices face formidable challenges that require cleverness to overcome, and their unique abilities are intriguing without immediately overshadowing others. The relationships between characters are skillfully crafted, with Hugh’s friends offering a much-needed balance and perspective, preventing him from feeling too isolated. I eagerly anticipate the continuation of this series!

The story starts off a bit slow, particularly with the brevity of the first book, but it soon finds its momentum and keeps you engaged throughout. I find great enjoyment in the characters, although there is a noticeable issue when writing teenagers—they often tend to exhibit emotions in extreme ways. Hugh, for instance, is portrayed as an excessively reclusive individual, while Talia wears her heart on her sleeve and tends to react more impulsively than necessary. Nevertheless, the underlying magic system adds a delightful and intriguing element to the narrative, and I eagerly anticipate its further evolution. Moreover, the presence of underlying conspiracies adds a thrilling prospect for future excitement in the story.
If you appreciate progressive Fantasy and can overlook the occasional inclusion of teenage characters with some associated negative tropes, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to you.
